Orthokeratology, also known as Ortho-K, is a non-invasive treatment that corrects blurry vision without lasers or the daily wear of eyeglasses and contacts. It is an overnight therapy that puts pressure on the cornea to reshape it and sharpen vision. Our optometrists at Uptown Eyecare in Orlando are experts in the field of Ortho-K and can determine whether it is an appropriate vision solution for you. We treat patients at our two convenient locations in Hunters Creek and Lake Nona.
Who Needs Ortho-K?
Ortho-k is a vision treatment that involves wearing contact lenses while you sleep to reshape the corneas. The cornea is the clear dome at the very front of the eye that focuses light on the retina and determines how well you see. Ortho-K usually benefits patients who have myopia or are nearsighted.
How Does Ortho-K Work?
Our optometrists will first measure and map the surface of your eye. Once the measurements are done, we can prescribe a series of rigid, gas-permeable contact lenses. These lenses will be solid enough to put pressure on the cornea while still allowing oxygen to get into the eye.
The contact lenses are worn during the night to flatten and reshape the cornea. It is a lot like wearing an aligning tray in your mouth while you sleep to straighten your teeth. It usually takes a series of contact lenses to get to the perfect cornea curvature with a final lens that is worn to maintain the shape.
Is Ortho-K a Permanent Vision Solution?
Ortho-K does not last forever. The cornea will go back to its previous shape without the pressure of the contact lenses. It is important to continue wearing the lenses and to schedule follow-up visits with our optometrists to evaluate their fit.
